Powerpoint: Help! I can't edit my PowerPoint presentation!
Posted by Pam Deering on July 28 2010 11:45 AM

This problem stems from the file having been saved as a “PowerPoint Show” rather than as a “PowerPoint Presentation”. The PowerPoint show file (with “. ppsx” at the end of the file name) is great for taking to class or posting on the web because it opens in “show” mode. The PowerPoint Presentation file (with file extension “.pptx”)  opens in “work” mode—you can easily edit the slides.

Here’s the fix---

1.       Open PPT first (rather than finding the finding the file in your folder and double-clicking on it).

2.       Click on the “Office Button” at the top, left corner of the PPT window.

3.       Select Open; then search for, select and open your ppsx file. It will now be open in the “edit” mode and you can continue your work.

Save your presentation as follows to ensure it opens in “edit” mode the next time:

1.       Click on the “Office Button” at the top, left corner of the PPT window.

2.       Select Save As.

3.       In the “Save as type:” box, select PowerPoint Presentation (not Show). Then save as you normally do.

To save the file to present in class or upload to your Bb site, save it as a PPT show:

1.       Click on the “Office Button” at the top, left corner of the PPT window.

2.       Select Save As.

3.       In the “Save as type:” box, select PowerPoint Show (not Presentaton). Then save as you normally do.
